The West Haven Regional Adult Day Center is a social and health care agency dealing with physical, emotional, and social problems experienced by older adults. We are a community of people helping each other. Services include a variety of group discussions, classes and activities, health monitoring, help with activities of daily living, intergenerational programs, individual and family counseling, recreation therapy, bathing and grooming, physical exercise and nutrition. Every effort is made to arrange safe, reliable transportation – in some cases it is provided by the Center and in other cases by the family or town of residence. The Center is a certified Medical Day Center.
Our Center serves frail and handicapped adults from the Greater New Haven area. To date, clients have attended from Bethany, Branford, East Haven, Hamden, Milford, Orange, New Haven, West Haven, and Woodbridge. Most are over 60 years of age, but services have been given to a few younger adults with clear needs for this program. Our Center is housed in one wing of the spacious and modern Johnson Community Center (formerly Noble School). The facilities include an arts and crafts room, living room, a dining room, a health and grooming room. Other portions of the Johnson Center house a child day care center, and various community offices. Participants in these programs share certain activities with our clients and help reduce the age segregation frequently found in services for older adults.
Applicants to the program are first interviewed in the home or at the Center and then in most cases are invited to attend the Center on a trial basis for three days. At the end of the trial period, the applicant and/or family will decide whether the program is suitable from their perspective and the staff will determine the appropriateness of the applicant for the program. A meeting will then be scheduled to discuss the results of the trial period. Applicants admitted will sign a contract stating treatment goals, days of attendance, transportation arrangements and fee.
Currently, there are two programs within the State of Connecticut that can help fund adult day care. They are the Alzheimer’s Respite Program, and the Home Care Program, both funded through the Area Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut. If a person is not eligible for any of the above programs a private fee can be negotiated. When an individual is unable to pay the full fee, a reduced fee can be negotiated based on our sliding fee scale. All efforts are made to help individuals and families locate available resources.
There are certain problems that cannot be adequately cared for at the Adult Day Center, such as chronic unmanageable incontinence, excessive wandering, abusive, harmful behavior, constant need for one-on-one staff monitoring, or contagious conditions. Applicants with these problems cannot be served at the Center. If these problems develop after a client enters the program, the day care services may need to be replaced by home care or nursing home care.
People who join our program almost always find it to be warm, friendly and active. Our capable professional staff is well complimented by a team of dedicated volunteers and students. There is a wide array of ages and experiences among our community of clients, volunteers, and staff. We use an old powerful medicine: People coming together in a mutually helpful atmosphere and, over a period of time, promoting each other’s strengths. Please feel free to call or visit our program if you would like more information.
