How do I find out about summer city jobs for my children? How to go about getting them signed up, ages, etc?

Answer

The Summer Youth Employment Program will be announced after the April school vacation.  Applications are expected to be available in the guidance offices at West Haven High School, Bailey and Carrigan Middle Schools during the week beginning April 27th. For students and other qualifying youth not attending the three schools listed, applications will be available on line as a download form to be mailed to Human Resources at City Hall or can be picked up during regular City Hall business hours at the Human Resources office.

Detail

Criteria for summer employment is different than in previous years for the majority of funding and is based upon income guidelines along with other factors which are more fully explained on the new application forms.  We are currently working on establishing work sites and programs. Eligible youth ages 14 – 24 will be able to qualify for the jobs program which is now being funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Stimulus Package). State funding, previously made available to West Haven and other municipalities in Connecticut, is not currently being funded and we are working to ensure that our program will meet the more stringent rules outlined by the government.

Application submission deadlines will be announced shortly as all applications under the federally funded program must be pre-certified to comply with Workforce Investment Act (WIA) regulations.  Eligibility and documentation requirements for WIA funding are more restrictive than they have been in the past three summers when we received State funds.  Depending upon the number of applications received, the number of available job site locations, and job slots, offers of employment may need to be determined by a lottery system.

Additional information will be made available in the weeks to come and will be advertised in the local newspapers as well as on the City of West Haven website.
